Community news
We continued the celebrations for Sr Eileen’s Silver Jubilee with a party in Marymount on 25th October.
Sr Eileen is profoundly grateful to everyone who helped to celebrate her Jubilee - cards, prayers, Masses and gifts. It was a wonderful day to share with those who attended. A Mass of Thanksgiving has been offered for the intentions of all my family and friends.
28th October was the first anniversary of the death of Sr Mary Clare. The Sisters remembered all of their deceased Sisters on 27th and 28th November with Office for the Dead and special Mass as they do each year. It is an opportunity to thank God for those who have gone before us, who persevered and left us a wonderful legacy. May they rest in peace. Fr Gooden’s homily can be read here.
Sr Eileen visited our Generalate in Morlaix, Brittany, for the General Council in the first week of November, while Sr Silvana and Sr Florence spent a week in Dieppe, where our first community was founded, exploring the origins of the order in the company of some of our French and African Sisters also in formation.
On Thursday 31st October we hosted the annual day for Religious Sisters from across the North of the Diocese, led by Fr Hugh Pollock, on the theme of the Holy Spirit.
Sr Margaret visited the Hyning Sisters for a day reflecting on the theme of truth and lying, appropriately on 25th November, the Feast of St Catherine of Alexandria, patroness of philosophers!
Guest House
Our annual visitors from Christian Meditation in Cumbria Meditation Group filled our guest house with peace and silence on their retreat on the first weekend in November, led by Revd. Cameron Butland of Rydal. For more on the Cumbria Meditation Group see: www.christianmeditation.org.uk.
The following weekend, we welcomed the students from Durham University Catholic Chaplaincy with their chaplain Fr Ben Earle OP.

Advent Carol Service
Carmel Priory Choir, conducted by Adrian Self, led the Churches Together in Grange and District Advent Carol Service on the afternoon of the first Sunday of Advent. This combined favourite traditional Advent hymns with more modern music, including a world première of our own Sr Anne’s ‘Christmas Message’. A beautiful, prayerful and appropriately ecumenical start to the Church’s New Year.
Nursing Home
One of the highlights of this month’s programme of activities was a visit to the Netherwood Hotel for afternoon tea, accompanied by classical music played by local youngsters.
Requiescat in Pace
On 27th October, Marie McLoughlin, a very regular visitor to us, died in hospital after a short stay at Boarbank. May she rest in peace.
