For times over the Christmas period

When: 5th-9th November 2018

Autumn break

This year’s theme:  The 17th Century

Three years ago, our first Autumn Break, took as its theme Faith and the Arts.

It was so popular that we decided to follow it up with similar events focusing on specific centuries.

Continuing last year’s fascinating exploration of the Reformation and Counter-Reformation,
we have decided to continue into the next century,
the age of Zurbaran and Rembrandt,
of Monteverdi and Purcell,
of the later Shakespeare and George Herbert,
of Descartes and Locke.

Autumn Break

What will happen?

The nights are drawing in, and you may need a break.

Are you ready for a few days of:

  • Peace and prayer?
  • Talks and discussion?
  • Films and music?
  • Art and literature?
  • Friendship and fun?

All our residential events include opportunities for:

  • Daily Mass
  • Shared Morning, Evening and Night Prayer
  • Quiet personal reflection
  • Shared meals and social time
  • Exploring the local area

Autumn Break

Who will speak?

Speakers will include:

  • Dr Joyce Simpson is a former Senior Lecturer in English and Head of Humanities at Leeds Trinity University, with a passion for encouraging others to love poetry.
  • Dr Rosemary Mitchell is a Senior Lecturer in History, at Leeds Trinity University, with a particular interest in the history of art.
  • Sr Margaret Atkins and Fr Richard Taylor who are resident at Boarbank will also contribute.

Where will it happen?

Boarbank Hall is situated near Grange-over-Sands in southern Cumbria, on the edge of the Lake District, with a fine view over Morecambe Bay.
Since 1921 it has housed an Augustinian convent. The sisters share a common life based on the Rule of St Augustine, with a focus on hospitality, and on care for the poor and sick.
The group will occupy the convent’s very comfortable guest house, and have full access to the attractive gardens. The convent’s spacious chapel will be available for the use of the group.
There is a railway station at Grange-over-Sands with a direct link to Preston and Manchester.

How to apply

Standard prices for our Guest House per night (full board and lodging) are £65 single, £75 single en suite, £115 twin or double.

We ask course participants to add a donation towards the cost of the courses, as you are each able and think appropriate.

Payment by donation only is available to students, the low-paid or anyone who needs it to attend. Please don’t hesitate to ask!
