Thinking Scripture

A holiday and study week for Christians sympathetic to a Catholic approach to scripture

If you are new to Boarbank, this is one of the best times of the year to visit, but, even here, it has been known to rain!

This course is a repeat of the one held in early June

The Gift of Scripture

God’s word comes to us in human form: in Jesus Christ and in human language, understood through human reason. Therefore we need to read the Scriptures both prayerfully and systematically, asking ‘How were they written?’ and ‘How should we interpret them?’
Thinking Scripture has been running since 2006. During the week, through lectures, discussion and reflection, we shall explore the different ways that we, as an informed believing community, might read and understand these texts.

It will be taught by Catholics, but open to Christians of any denomination, and to anyone else who is seriously interested in learning more about the Scriptures.

An opportunity

  • to make like-minded friends
  • to enjoy a weekend together in beautiful surroundings
  • to think seriously about the scriptures
  • to pray and reflect

Who will teach it?

Sr Margaret Atkins taught theology in Leeds for ten years and joined the community at Boarbank in 2005. She has a particular interest in Augustine and Aquinas, and in ethics.

Dr Geoffrey Turner was for many years Head of Theology at Trinity and All Saints, Leeds. He has taught and written on a range of New Testament and other theological themes. He has recently published a book on St Paul, The Paul of Surprises.

Fr Richard Taylor studied at Louvain and the École Biblique in Jerusalem before beginning his teaching career at Ushaw College and Durham University. He has lectured for many years in Rome, where he taught courses on scripture and on ecumenism. Fr Taylor has taught as a visiting lecturer in many parts of the world.
