Apologies to our regulars for the long gap since the last news.

Sr Rita Golden Jubilee Sr Rita Golden Jubilee

It was a great joy to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Sr Rita at Ince Blundell on 22nd August. Ad multos annos!

We were very pleased to welcome Sr Chiara Curzel from the Community of the Daughters of the Heart of Jesus in Trento, Italy, who joined us for a month over the summer to improve her English. She teaches Patristics at the Augustinianum in Rome and in the local seminary.

Four of the Sisters went to Liverpool for the Adoremus Eucharistic Congress, a very rich and encouraging few days, which had a real family atmosphere, despite the large numbers, and lots of interesting and informative events.

An opportunity to meet up with friends old and new. Major highlights were the talks by Bishop Robert Barron and Adoration, led by the Cardinal, with several thousand people praying together.

The talks, including one by Sr Margaret A., are available on YouTube.

Sr Eileen went to Malestroit for the General Council and Prioresses’ Assembly and found Sr Geneviève a little frailer but in good spirits, and delighted always to get news of Boarbank.

Maria Hall continues to give us regular singing lessons - we hope you are starting to notice the difference!

Sisters have attended the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Sr Mary Josephine at Hyning, and a farewell Mass for the Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Mary, who are leaving Barrow after 120 years.

Willshire Piano Duo  Visit of Bishop Paul Aug 2018

Recent Grange Concerts have included a marvellous husband-and-wife team, the Wilshire Piano Duo.

Bishop Paul celebrated the Feast of St Augustine for and with us, and Fr Robert Billing joined us also, just before departing to Ottawa for further studies in Canon Law. We wish him all the very best with this.

This year’s joint retreat with the Augustinian Friars was given by Fr John Farrell OP on the theme, ‘Who is this Jesus who is with us now?’

His talks were profound, challenging and totally engaging, and deeply appreciated by us all. Sr Rita and Sr Perpetua joined us for this from Liverpool.

Thinking Faith in July was on the theme ‘Young and Old’, in anticipation of the Youth Synod.

Fr Richard Finn OP was the chaplain, and guest speakers include Fr Luiz Ruscillo and Sarah Burrows from CAFOD, a delegate at the Synod. Topics ranged from philosophy to scripture to art to practical evangelisation to reformation history to Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea.

Trips out included a walk along the shore of Lake Windermere.

Thinking Scripture in September followed the June week in taking the theme of Wisdom Literature.

Thinking Scripture Thinking Scripture

This proved popular and thought-provoking, as participants appreciated getting to grips with texts that are less well known. Next year we return to the New Testament, looking at the Epistles of Peter, James and John.

The Called to Work weekend brought together a lively group of people interested in thinking about how to make changes at or in work. Our main speakers, James Atkins, Helen Bailey, Fr Dermot Tredget and Martin Lawson, all in different ways used their own stories to inspire us and stimulate wide-ranging and imaginative discussion. As well as our regular Families’ Week, we welcomed several other families over the summer, including from Italy, France, Poland, Catalonia and Syria. Christian Meditation UK held a teaching weekend in the Guest House in September and we hosted our regular Cumbria Christian Meditation weekend in November. Day groups have included the Co-Workers of Mother Theresa and St Charles Parish, with a day to follow up the Adoremus Congress. We are greatly enriched by the variety of guests who come to spend time and share some of their lives and their interests with us.

We say goodbye and thank you to Cindy Metcalfe, who has served us so well over the years in the kitchen, and wish her the very best for her exciting new post. We welcome Sara as her replacement.

We are currently without a Manager, as Sally has moved on to a new post. We thank her for all she contributed to Boarbank and wish her well for the future. We have welcomed a number of new staff and we wish them every happiness and success in their roles.

Other news

We are delighted with the new sound system in Chapel which seems to work very well for both loop-system users and others.

Sr Margaret A. gave a talk in Oxford on St Augustine’s on telling lies, as preparation for a couple of articles she is writing on this. Fr Dixie went to Hexham and Newcastle to speak to their Eucharistic Ministers and to the Catenians in Chesterfield, on both occasions speaking about authority in the Church.
