Our third weekend of Our Lady in Latin took place on 11th-13th July. These weekends were designed to enable complete beginners in Latin to learn all the Latin we need to sing three of our best loved Marian Antiphons. They are led by Alison Samuels, a highly experienced teacher of Latin, Ancient Philosophy, and other Classical topics. Alison has designed a mini-grammar book to accompany the course, and each antiphon conveniently turns out to emphasise different points of key grammar! Alison’s husband, Bob, a Senior Lecturer in Music at the Open University, provides a complementary talk on musical settings of the Antiphons, with musical illustrations. We also enjoyed actually singing the hymns ourselves.
Anyone who has participated in Our Lady in Latin, or who already has a moderate grasp of basic Latin, is invited to join us for our follow-up weekend, Credo, which will focus on the Creed and, depending on time, some other parts of the Mass. This will take place at Boarbank on 23rd-25/26th October 2026.
