Our guest tutors for the weekend were Alison Samuels, a highly experienced Classics tutor, and her husband Robert, who lectures in music for the Open University. Alison led us with great imagination, clarity and humour through the Latin grammar of well known hymns to Our Lady, and Bob provided a superb history of musical interpretations of them. We also learned to sing several of the anthems. As usual, the weekend included plenty of time to pray, relax and have fun together – a key element was the collective production of a stunning jigsaw of the Wilton Diptych – bang on the theme!
For those who missed this first time around, you have another chance next year: a repeat of Our Lady in Latin is planned for 21st-23rd/24th March. A follow up weekend, Magnificat!, using the canticles from the beginning of St Luke, is planned for 24th-27th October.
